In order to cultivate domestic tax officers in international taxation regime and enhance their professional knowledge and foreign language ability, the Training Institute, Ministry of Finance (MOFTI), has cooperated with the School of Law of Southern Methodist University to hold the International Taxation Academy (ITA) since 1984. Every year, the MOFTI invites international scholars and experts to speak on the latest international taxation trends. Foreign tax officers from friendly countries are also invited to join domestic tax and customs officers in the training courses, share international tax experiences with each other, and create opportunities for mutual cooperation and mutual benefit.
The 2018 ITA is held for 3 weeks from 30th July to 17thAugust. The courses are arranged based on the latest international and domestic taxation trends and focus on 3 major themes: 1. Transfer Pricing, 2. Cross-Border E-Commerce and 3. Exchange of Information and Common Reporting Standard. Dr. James Brant McOmber from the United States, Ms. Sitanan Sriworakorn from Thailand, and Dr. Chi Chung and Dr. Kuo-Liang Chen from Taiwan are the lecturers.
Dr. McOmber is a senior manager of Transfer Pricing Department of the International Deloitte Accounting Firm. Ms. Sriworakorn is an assistant public prosecutor of the Office of the Attorney General of Tailand. Dr. Chung is an assistant research professor of Institutum Jurisprudentiae of Academia Sinica. Dr. Chen is an associate professor of Department of Public Finance of Naional Cheng-Chi University
The MOFTI particularly appreciates the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their assistance in inviting foreign tax officers from Guatemala, Kingdom of Eswatini, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The guests from these countires, along with the domestic tax officers from the Ministry of Finance and the affiliated organizations, will participate in the Academy together.
The ITA which has been held for 34 years, is well-praised by trainees for achieving outstanding results. It not only invites foreign and domestic scholars and experts to introduce new international and professional taxation knowledge to tax and customs officers, but also enables the participants to exchange their experience through interactive topical learning methods to expand their horizons. During the training period, cultural activities are also arranged to convey our traditional culture and promote friendship among participants. It is an important platform for the exchange of information on international taxation between the Ministry of Finance and other countries.
